Tasks: This is the first 30 hours of a 60 hour class. There are 12 tasks assigned. Each task has an estimated amount of time assigned to it. Some will take less time to complete a task and some may need more; however, if you are going over the amount of time assigned to "complete a task," there is a problem and you need to speak to me about it. Reasonable accommodations may be allowed. It is recommended that you do these tasks in order (except for Task 11 which is worked on every Wednesday for SSR).

Task 1: Pretest
Completion time - ½ hour
Please complete the pretest BEFORE attempting ANY assignments. Please relax this will only test what you know at this point in time. You are graded for doing it regardless of your score.
Task 2: Background

Read the following short story at "The Ebony Frame." List as many elements of a Gothic short story that you can find, and include a description of the passage where you found it.

Essay must be typed and submitted using Google Docs, unless you receive other instructions. You MUST DOUBLE-SPACE AND LEFT-JUSTIFY YOUR PAPER. You must complete the rubric handout and turn it in to have your essay graded. Essay must be at least 400 words and include examples from the book. Please note that the grading of your essay may take 24 hours or more. You may use the link from the OWL Lab for a complete understanding of what is involved in writing an argumentative essay.

Task 6: Exam
Completion time - 1 hour
Must achieve a 70% or greater to pass.
Task 7: Contemporary Fiction
Completion time - 15 hours
Read Geek Love or a book from the Dean Koontz Frankenstein series and write a 200 word essay or multimedia project with presentation.
Compare one of the characters to Mary Shelley’s monster. Do you see similarities? Differences? Back up your thesis with examples from each book.
OR read Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes: Compare and contrast King’s use of horror to Shelley's use of horror.
You must increase your TABE score to receive credit for this section.

Choose one (1) essay topic:
- Write a paper in which you discuss the elements Shelley uses in Frankenstein that cause the story to be full of terror. Discuss how the setting, nature, and the plot make this story Gothic or argue how the story does not meet the qualifications of Gothic literature. Be sure to use evidence from the text to support your opinion.
- Mary Shelley has Victor Frankenstein create a living being, who then becomes a murderer. Who, or what, is responsible for the wretch's behavior? What is the creator’s role in the life of his creation? What should be the relationship of the creator to the creation? Frankenstein fulfill his role as creator or does he fail in that role?
- Research cloning and write an argumentative essay on the whether it is ethical or not.
